Fitness is about being able to do what you like with your body, whether that is lifting hundreds of pounds, or winning games, or keeping your body mobile.
I have been fortunate enough to be fit and active my entire life. I've gotten to train and compete with people who are now olympians, and I've also gotten to play recreational volleyball where we lose every single game.
I spend a lot of time working out because it makes me strong, and seeing yourself improve through discipline and dedication is extremely fulfilling.
The only way to stick to a plan of fitness is making a plan that you will actually do. A lot of success in any fitness is through dedication, which means you need to show up. Any progress takes time, think months and years, and showing up to work out is a lot easier when you are doing things that you actually like.
You can do fitness for any reason, including not to make any progress at all. You can spend a year doing the same times or weights and that can be great because you can still move your body! Maybe fitness gets you outside, gets you to socialize, relaxes you, reminds you of the amazing things your body can do.
Comparison is the thief of joy. There will always be people more fit. Fitness is really personal and everyone's body is different in what they can and can't do. It is really exciting when you find things you are naturally better at, so try new things!
It makes sweating and pushing yourself easier to do it in a group. Find people who will celebrate your wins, and who you love to cheer on. Make sure you tell your community so they can help hold you accountable.
Habits are much harder to form than they are to keep. Creating a routine will make it easier, same program each week, same time each day of the week, especially if you are new to fitness. The less you have to think about what you are going to do today, the easier it is to show up. If you need help building a program or a trainer, contact me!
Fitness is a long game, be kind to yourself, one missed day (or week) is not going to ruin your results.
Listen to your body before you listen to anyone else. It is possible to build a nutrition plan around any restrictions. It is a great practice to learn things that don't agree with you, and to learn to eat to feel good! You can find out how much you should be eating by tracking your weight and eating enough so that you don't feel tired.
Consider the convenience in how long it takes to cook when you are building a diet you can stick to! It is much easier to control your diet if you cook your own meals, but when you go out to eat you can always find ways to stick to the plan.
If you are trying to gain weight, including muscle, you need to eat so much! For example I try to eat 4000 calories when I'm building muscle.
🔥hot take: Unless you are actively trying to put on pounds and pounds of muscle, you do not need to eat a ton of protein.
It takes so much repetition to become good at a new skill. If you want to become better at something, flexibility, hand stands, pull ups, try to do it everyday.
You are training both your muscles and your nervous system when you exercise. You can train the same exercise in multiple ways to progress in strength or progress in athleticism.
Your muscles and nerves need time to recover. Sometimes this truly means doing lying on the couch all day, sometimes this means actively recovering with some mobility exercises.
If you want to get stronger, you need to train with weights as heavy as you can handle them at only a few reps. If you want to look stronger, you want to train at lighter weights for as many reps as you can handle.
🔥hot take: Cross-training keeps you from injuring yourself, more entertained, and more motivated for your program.
